Can a Christian Be Demon-Possessed?

Featured Video Play Icon

Can a demon possess a Christian? Demons are fallen angels who joined Satan’s rebellion against God. They oppose God and attempt to deceive, intimidate, accuse, and oppress people—but can they possess someone who belongs to Jesus Christ?

The biblical evidence indicates that a genuine Christian, indwelt by the Holy Spirit, cannot be possessed by a demon. Christians can, however, experience temptation, deception, intimidation, and spiritual opposition.

What Does the Bible Say About Demons?

The Bible describes Satan and demonic forces as:

  • Liars — John 8:44
  • Accusers — Revelation 12:10
  • Deceivers — 2 Corinthians 11:3
  • Intimidators and oppressors — 1 Peter 5:8
  • Captors seeking to control people — 2 Timothy 2:24–26
  • Disguisers who can appear righteous — 2 Corinthians 11:14

Because demons are deceptive, Christians must compare every spiritual claim with the truth of God’s Word.

Can a Demon Possess a Christian?

The New Testament does not instruct Christians to cast demons out of believers. Instead, Christians are told to resist the devil, stand firm in their faith, and depend on God’s strength.

Ephesians 6:10–11 says:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

This passage warns Christians that spiritual warfare is real. It does not teach that a demon can possess someone who belongs to Christ.

The Bible says that Christians are indwelt by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19) and have been delivered from the domain of darkness into the kingdom of Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:13).

First John 4:4 gives believers this assurance:

Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.

Can Christians Experience Demonic Oppression?

Although a Christian cannot be possessed by a demon, demonic forces can still tempt, deceive, accuse, intimidate, and oppress believers.

That is why Christians are instructed to:

  • Put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10–18).
  • Submit to God and resist the devil (James 4:7).
  • Remain alert and stand firm in faith (1 Peter 5:8–9).
  • Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Demonic forces are real, but Christians do not need to live in fear. Jesus Christ has authority over every spiritual power, and believers can rely on His strength and the truth of His Word.
