Easter Is a Matter of Life or Death

Easter is a matter of life or death.

Why the Resurrection of Jesus Christ Still Matters Today

If Jesus Christ had not died on the cross, had not risen from the dead three days later, and were not alive today, your faith would be meaningless. The Bible would be false. And when you die, that would be the end. Darkness. Silence. Forever. But He did die. He did rise. And He is alive.

Undeniable Truth

This undeniable truth is at the core of the Christian faith, and it’s what makes Easter more than a mere holiday—it’s a celebration of hope, redemption, and eternal life. In this blog post, we’ll explore why the resurrection of Jesus Christ matters deeply to you and me, even though it happened over 2,000 years ago. This is not just theology. This is life and death—literally.

Why the Resurrection Is the Cornerstone of Faith

The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:17, “and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.” The resurrection is not an optional belief. It is the foundation. Without it, Christianity collapses.

Old Testament Resurrections

  • Elijah and the Widow’s Son (1 Kings 17:17-24). The first recorded resurrection in Scripture comes through the prophet Elijah, who revived the son of a widow in Zarephath. The boy had died, and Elijah pleaded with God to return his life. God heard his prayer, and the child’s life returned. This miracle affirmed to the woman that Elijah was truly a man of God.
  • Elisha and the Shunammite Woman’s Son (2 Kings 4:18-37). Elisha, Elijah’s successor, also performed a resurrection. A Shunammite woman’s son died unexpectedly, and Elisha went to great lengths—literally laying on the child—to bring him back to life. Again, God restored life through the faith of His servant.
  • The Man Who Touched Elisha’s Bones (2 Kings 13:20-21). In one of the most astonishing accounts, a dead man was thrown into Elisha’s grave and came back to life after touching the prophet’s bones. These events all foreshadowed something greater to come—but none of these resurrected individuals are alive today.

New Testament Resurrections

  • Lazarus (John 11:1-44). Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days when Jesus arrived. Jesus wept. Then He called Lazarus by name, and Lazarus came out of the tomb, still bound in burial cloths. This was no mere resuscitation—this was divine power over death. But even Lazarus died again eventually.
  • The Saints After Jesus’ Death (Matthew 27:50-53). At the moment of Jesus’ death, the veil of the temple was torn in two, and many tombs were opened. Saints who had died came out and appeared to many in Jerusalem. It was a divine sign that death had been conquered.
  • But let’s be clear: each of these individuals who came back to life eventually died again. Their resurrections were temporary.

The Difference That Changes Everything

Jesus Christ’s resurrection is categorically different. He died. He was buried. But when He rose, He did so in a glorified, immortal body—and He never died again. That changes everything.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:20-23:

“But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.”

  • Christ is the “first fruits”—the guarantee of a future resurrection for all who belong to Him. Because He lives, you can live too.

Two Words That Will Change Your Life

Let’s look at two words that can completely shift how you view your life: Eternity and Forgiven.

Eternity

Every single person has an eternity. The question is not if you’ll live forever—it’s where. Heaven or hell.

Revelation 21:3-4 promises that God will dwell with His people, wipe away every tear, and abolish pain and death—for those who follow Christ. But Jesus also taught about hell—a place of eternal separation from God, where there is no rest, no redemption, no second chance (Matthew 18:8, Luke 16:24).

Forgiven

If you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, your sins—past, present, and future—are completely forgiven.

Hebrews 7:25 says,

“He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”

Jesus prays for you—if you are His. He is your advocate, and the Holy Spirit is your helper.

But if you reject Christ, John 3:18 says,

“He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Why Jesus Had to Die

Romans 6:23 says,

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Sin demands payment. Jesus paid it on the cross. But if He had stayed dead, the payment would not have been validated.

The resurrection is the receipt. It proves the debt was paid in full.

What This Means for You

You will live forever—one way or the other. But only through Christ can you live with God, redeemed and restored.

You cannot earn your salvation. Ephesians 2:8-9 says:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Even the desire to come to Jesus is initiated by God. Jesus said in John 6:44,

“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.”

The Voice Of Jesus

John 10:27-30 says:

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish.”

If you belong to Him, you are safe in His hand—forever.

Final Thoughts: Between You and Hell Stands the Cross

Between you and an eternity in hell stands one thing: the cross of Jesus Christ. If He had not died, had not been resurrected, and was not alive today, it would be lights out forever.

  • But He did rise.
  • Easter is a daily reality for Christians. It’s a reminder that Jesus lives, and because He lives, you can too.

Have you accepted the two most powerful words—Eternity and Forgiven—into your life?

  • If not, today is the day.
  • And if this message has impacted you, would you consider helping us share it with the world? Romans 10:17 says,

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”
