Why Give?

Scripture teaches that cheerful, willing generosity is a real means God uses to bless and to advance His purposes, and it repeatedly commends openhanded giving as spiritually fruitful:

Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows with blessing will also reap with blessing. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:6–7, LSB). Also reference Proverbs 11:24–25; Acts 20:35; Matthew 25:34–40).

But warning: the unbiblical prosperity gospel given by false teachers distorts the truth of giving by turning grace into a formula—giving in order to “get,” and recasting generosity as an investment scheme rather than love for God and neighbor. That transactional mindset is spiritually dangerous because it can foster selfish motives, disillusionment, and a false view of God when promised returns fail to appear:

“You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures” (James 4:3, LSB).

Giving with the Right Heart

True biblical giving flows from the heart with gratitude and compassion, with hope set on God rather than wealth, storing up eternal treasure rather than pursuing earthly gain:

“Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty or to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. Command them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed” (1 Timothy 6:17–19, LSB).

Give joyfully, not out of pressure. As 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NIV) reminds us,

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

God is generous, and He calls us to be like Him. Everything we have is because of His generosity and grace.

“From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.” (John 1:16, NLT)
