What If There Had Been No Easter? Why the Resurrection Matters

Have you ever considered why the resurrection matters? Imagine that Jesus died on the cross but never rose from the grave. Christian preaching would be pointless, faith would be empty, sin would remain undefeated, and death would have the final word.

Easter is more than an annual holiday. It celebrates the historical and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without that event, Christianity would collapse.

The Apostle Paul explains exactly what would be lost if Christ had not risen.

If Jesus Had Not Risen, Christianity Would Be Empty

First Corinthians 15 presents the resurrection as essential—not an optional detail Christians can accept or reject.

Paul writes:

And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.
—1 Corinthians 15:14, LSB

If Jesus remained in the grave, He would have been another religious teacher who died. His promises would have failed, the apostles’ message would have been false, and Christianity would have no saving power.

If Christ is still in the grave, Christianity does not merely need adjustment. It has no foundation.

But if Jesus rose from the dead, nothing matters more.

Six Consequences If Christ Had Not Been Raised

In 1 Corinthians 15:12–19, Paul explains what would be true if the resurrection had never happened.

1. Christian Preaching Would Be Pointless

The apostles preached that Jesus died for sin and rose from the dead. If He did not rise, their central message was empty.

Christianity is not primarily a collection of inspirational teachings. It is the proclamation of what God accomplished through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

2. Christian Faith Would Be Useless

Faith has value only when its object is trustworthy.

If Jesus did not rise, trusting Him for salvation would accomplish nothing. Christians would be placing their eternal hope in someone who could not defeat death.

3. The Apostles Would Be False Witnesses

The apostles did not merely teach that Jesus’ spirit continued or that His ideas lived on. They testified that God physically raised Him from the dead.

If their testimony was false, they were not mistaken about a minor detail. They were misrepresenting God.

4. We Would Still Be in Our Sins

Paul writes:

And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.
—1 Corinthians 15:17, LSB

The resurrection demonstrated that Jesus’ sacrifice was effective and that death could not hold Him. Without the resurrection, there would be no assurance that sin had been defeated or that believers were justified before God.

5. Christians Who Died Would Be Lost

If Christ did not rise, there would be no resurrection hope for those who died trusting Him. Their expectation of eternal life would have ended at the grave.

6. Christians Would Be the Most Pitiful People

Christians sacrifice, serve, endure persecution, resist sin, and place their eternal hope in Christ. If Jesus never rose, those sacrifices would be based on a false promise.

Paul concludes that Christians would be the most pitiable of all people if their hope in Christ applied only to this earthly life.

Then he declares the truth that changes everything:

But now Christ has been raised from the dead.

The Resurrection Confirms the Gospel

The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for sin, was buried, and rose on the third day.

The cross and resurrection cannot be separated. Jesus paid the penalty for sin through His death, and His resurrection demonstrated His victory over sin and death.

The resurrection did not turn Jesus into the Son of God. He has always been the eternal Son. Romans 1:4 teaches that He was powerfully declared to be the Son of God through the resurrection.

God publicly vindicated the One whom people had rejected and crucified.

The empty tomb announces that Jesus is exactly who He claimed to be.

The Resurrection Defeated Death

Death has ruled over every generation. Regardless of wealth, influence, intelligence, or power, every person eventually dies.

But death could not hold Jesus.

Romans 6:9 says:

Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.

Jesus did not merely return to His previous earthly life and later die again. He rose with an imperishable resurrection body and will never die again.

Because Christ rose, those who belong to Him also have the promise of resurrection and eternal life.

Death remains painful, but it no longer has the final word for a Christian.

Scripture Records Eyewitnesses of the Risen Jesus

First Corinthians 15:3–8 records that the risen Jesus appeared to Peter, the 12 apostles, more than 500 brothers (believers in Christ) at one time, James, then to all of the apostles, and finally Paul.

The Gospel accounts provide additional details. Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene and other women. He showed the disciples His wounds. Thomas was invited to examine them. Jesus ate food in the disciples’ presence, spoke with them, taught them, and was seen repeatedly over a period of 40 days.

The biblical accounts describe bodily encounters—not merely dreams, private feelings, or a vague belief that Jesus continued spiritually.

The disciples initially struggled to believe that Jesus had risen. Their later preaching was based on their conviction that they had encountered Him alive after His crucifixion.

The Resurrection Proves Jesus’ Words Are True

Jesus predicted His death and resurrection. He also declared:

I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies.
—John 11:25, LSB

If Jesus remained dead, that claim would have failed.

Because He rose, His promise of eternal life rests on His demonstrated authority over death.

The resurrection confirms that Jesus is not merely a moral teacher, prophet, or religious leader. He is the risen Lord and the only Savior.

Why the Resurrection Matters Today

The resurrection is not only about what happened to Jesus nearly two thousand years ago. It changes the present and future of everyone who belongs to Him.

Because Jesus rose:

• Believers can know that His sacrifice for sin was sufficient.
• Death has been defeated.
• Christians have the promise of bodily resurrection.
• Eternal life with the Father and the Son for all believers is real.
• Prayer is heard by a living Savior.
• Jesus continually intercedes for His people.
• Christians have hope during suffering and grief.
• Believers can live transformed lives through God’s power.
• The gospel can be proclaimed with confidence.

First Peter 1:3 says that God has given believers new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Christian hope is living because Jesus is living.

Jesus Is Alive and Intercedes for His People

Hebrews 7:25 says:

Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

Jesus is not a dead teacher whose followers are attempting to preserve His memory. He is alive and continually intercedes for those who draw near to God through Him.

His saving work is complete, and His intercession never ends.

A Christian’s security does not rest on personal perfection. It rests on the finished work and continuing ministry of the risen Christ.

How Should You Respond to the Resurrection?

The resurrection demands more than intellectual acknowledgment. It calls for repentance and faith.

No pastor, church, baptism, religious ceremony, good deed, or repeated phrase can save you. Salvation is God’s gift through Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 2:8–9 teaches that salvation is by grace through faith and not the result of human works.

Romans 10:9 says:

If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Saving faith does not mean merely agreeing that a historical event occurred. It means trusting the risen Jesus as Lord and Savior.

If God is drawing your heart toward Christ, do not ignore Him. Admit that you are a sinner and cannot save yourself. Turn from your sin and place your faith in Jesus Christ. There is no second chance to accept Christ after you die.

A prayer cannot save you; Jesus saves you. But you can call upon Him and express your repentance and faith:

“Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and cannot save myself. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. Forgive me, change my heart, and help me follow You as my Lord and Savior. I repent of my sins.”

The power is not in saying perfect words. Salvation rests entirely in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

What If There Had Been No Easter?

If Jesus had not risen, preaching would be pointless, faith would be useless, the apostles would be false witnesses, sinners would remain unforgiven, deceased believers would be lost, and death would have the final word.

But Jesus did rise.

That is why the resurrection matters. Sin has been paid for, death has been defeated, hope is alive, and eternal life is promised to those who belong to Christ.

Easter is not meaningful because of traditions, decorations, or one Sunday on the calendar.

Easter matters because the tomb is empty.

Jesus Christ is alive.
