What should a new Christian do after placing faith in Jesus Christ? Becoming a Christian begins a lifelong process of learning, spiritual growth, repentance, and obedience.

Some relationships and habits may change. You may experience questions, temptation, or opposition. However, God does not leave new believers to navigate the Christian life alone. He gives them the Holy Spirit, His Word, and the fellowship of the church.

What Changes When You Become a Christian?

When you become a Christian, you receive a new identity in Jesus Christ. Your circumstances may not change immediately, but your relationship with God and the direction of your life have changed forever.

Some people may not understand your new faith. Friends or family members may question your beliefs or encourage you to return to old habits.

This does not mean you must immediately end every relationship with someone who is not a Christian. Believers are called to love others and share the gospel. However, wise boundaries may be necessary when someone repeatedly pressures you toward sinful behavior.

Seek counsel from mature Christians before making major relational decisions.

The Holy Spirit Indwells Every Believer

One of the most important changes is that the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within everyone who belongs to Jesus Christ.

Jesus promised His disciples that the Father would provide “another Advocate” who would remain with them forever:

He will give you another Advocate, that He may be with you forever.

The Holy Spirit:

• Helps believers understand God’s truth.
• Convicts them of sin.
• Produces spiritual fruit.
• Gives strength for obedience.
• Helps them pray.
• Assures them that they belong to God.
• Equips them to serve other people.

The Holy Spirit is not merely an impersonal force. He is God and personally works within every genuine believer.

Should New Christians Expect Spiritual Opposition?

Christians should be aware of temptation and spiritual opposition. Satan seeks to deceive and discourage God’s people. However, not every inconvenience, disagreement, or difficult circumstance should automatically be attributed to a direct satanic attack.

Believers should remain spiritually alert while taking responsibility for their own choices. They resist temptation through prayer, Scripture, obedience, and dependence on the Holy Spirit.

God’s opinion ultimately defines your identity, but this does not mean every human opinion should be ignored. Listen carefully to wise pastors, mature believers, and people who speak biblical truth with love.

1. Find a Faithful Local Church

A new Christian needs regular biblical teaching, worship, fellowship, and accountability. Look for a church that:

• Teaches the Bible faithfully featuring expository preaching, verse by verse.
• Clearly proclaims salvation through Jesus Christ.
• Practices prayer and Christian fellowship.
• Has trustworthy and accountable leadership.
• Encourages spiritual growth and service.
• Protects children and vulnerable people.

Romans 10:17 says:

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

Attending church cannot save you, but participation in a healthy church is an important part of Christian growth.

2. Be Baptized

Baptism is an act of obedience commanded by Jesus. It publicly identifies a believer with Christ and pictures the believer’s union with His death, burial, and resurrection.  Baptism does not earn salvation. Salvation is received by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9).

3. Read the Bible Every Day

The Bible reveals who God is, explains the gospel, and teaches Christians how to live. Begin with a manageable reading plan rather than trying to understand everything immediately.

A helpful starting plan is:

• Read one chapter of John each day to learn about Jesus.
• Read one chapter of Proverbs each day for practical wisdom.
• Write down questions to discuss with a pastor or mature Christian.
• Purchase a study Bible containing notes for interpretation if you don’t already have one. I recommend the MacArthur Study Bible.
• Choose one truth or command to apply each day.

A chapter from each book generally takes about 15–20 minutes. Consistency and thoughtful application matter more than speed.

4. Develop a Daily Prayer Life

Prayer is how believers speak with God. You do not need impressive language or a special formula.

A simple daily prayer can include:

• Praise for who God is.
• Thanksgiving for His grace and provision.
• Confession of sin.
• Requests for wisdom and strength.
• Prayer for other people.
• Submission to God’s will.

Prayer should become an honest and continuing part of your relationship with God.

5. Build Christian Relationships

God did not design Christians to grow in isolation. Friendships with mature believers provide encouragement, accountability, prayer, and practical support.

A small group or Bible study can help you develop relationships beyond the larger worship service. The group does not have to contain a particular number of people; what matters is faithful teaching, trust, appropriate accountability, and care for one another.

Relationships are often strengthened in circles where people can speak and listen—not only in rows where people attend a service.

6. Turn Away from Old Sinful Patterns

Following Jesus involves repentance. Some former habits, activities, and relationships will need to change.

Ask God to show you:

• Behaviors that Scripture forbids.
• Relationships that continually lead you toward sin.
• Areas where you need accountability.
• People you have harmed and should make amends to.
• Practical boundaries that will help you obey.

Christian growth is usually gradual. Do not become discouraged when you struggle. Confess sin, receive God’s forgiveness, and continue walking in obedience.

7. Serve and Love Other People

Jesus summarized God’s commands by teaching us to love God with our entire being and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Christians worship God, care for people in need, serve the church, forgive others, and use their abilities for the good of those around them.

Good works do not earn salvation. They are the fruit of a life being changed by God.

Galatians 6:9 encourages believers:

And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.

8. Share Your Faith and Help Others Follow Jesus

Jesus commanded His followers to “make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:19, LSB). Christians should share the good news of Jesus and help other believers learn to obey His teaching.

You do not need to know the answer to every question before telling someone what Christ has done for you. Be honest about what you know, continue learning, and direct difficult questions to trustworthy Christian leaders.

The Christian life includes six closely connected priorities:

• Worship: Love God with your entire life.
• Ministry: Love and serve other people.
• Fellowship: Participate in the family of believers.
• Discipleship: Learn and obey Christ’s teaching.
• Evangelism: Share the gospel and help make disciples.
• Accountability: Choose an accountability partner who will hold you accountable for your spiritual walk.

Keep Growing in Christ

Earthly life is not merely a disposable dress rehearsal. What Christians do now matters to God and affects other people. Believers should live with an eternal perspective while faithfully serving Christ in the present.
