In baseball, striking out means walking back to the dugout.
In life, however, striking out spiritually carries eternal consequences.
One of the most sobering truths Jesus ever spoke is that many people who believe they are on the right path will one day discover they were mistaken.
That should cause every one of us to stop and ask an important question:
Am I truly saved?
Jesus doesn’t want anyone to be deceived about eternity.
That’s why He gave one of the clearest warnings in all of Scripture.
The Wide Gate and the Narrow Gate
Jesus said,
Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
– Matthew 7:13–14 (LSB)
These verses teach that not everyone is traveling toward eternal life.
Many sincerely believe they are following God, yet they remain on the broad road that leads to destruction.
The issue is not sincerity.
The issue is whether we have truly trusted Jesus Christ according to the gospel.
The Most Frightening Words Jesus Ever Spoke
Later in the same chapter Jesus said,
Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
– Matthew 7:21 (LSB)
These are among the most sobering words in the Bible.
- Notice that these people were religious.
- They called Jesus “Lord.”
- They believed they knew Him.
- Yet Jesus said many would not enter heaven.
Why? Because they had religion without a genuine relationship with Christ.
You Cannot Earn Eternal Life
Many people trust in good works.
Church attendance.
Baptism.
Giving.
Helping others.
None of those things can save us.
The Bible teaches that salvation is entirely by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Don’t Strike Out Eternally
In baseball, every player strikes out eventually.
Spiritually, however, you don’t have to.
God has provided one way of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ.
If God is convicting your heart today, don’t ignore His gracious invitation. There is no second chance to accept Christ after one has died.
Repent of your sins.
Place your trust in Jesus Christ alone.
The Bible says,
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.
– Acts 4:12 (LSB)
Today is the day to respond.
Tomorrow is promised to no one.
Treasure Truth
The greatest tragedy is not striking out in baseball—it is missing heaven because you never truly trusted Jesus Christ.
