The Lord’s Prayer: What Jesus Taught Us About Prayer

Part 2 of the TreasureTop Prayer Series

In Part 1 of our Prayer Series, we learned a simple biblical pattern for prayer using the acronym P.R.A.Y.—Praise, Repent, Ask, and Yield.

Now let’s look at the greatest example of prayer ever given.

When Jesus’ disciples asked Him how to pray, He gave them what we commonly call The Lord’s Prayer. Rather than providing words to repeat mechanically, Jesus gave His followers a model that teaches us what should characterize every prayer.

Our Father Who Is in Heaven

Jesus began by reminding us that believers have a personal relationship with God.

We come before Him as our heavenly Father.

At the same time, we remember that He is holy, sovereign, and worthy of our worship.

Prayer is both personal and reverent.

Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

Your Kingdom Come

Prayer is not merely about asking God to bless our plans.

It is about asking Him to accomplish His purposes.

When we pray for God’s kingdom to come, we are asking Him to rule in our hearts, advance His gospel throughout the world, and ultimately fulfill His eternal plan.

Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Every prayer should include a willingness to submit to God’s will above our own.

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

Jesus teaches us to depend upon God every day.

He cares about our physical needs.

He invites us to bring our concerns, burdens, and requests before Him.

Nothing is too small.

Nothing is too great.

Give us this day our daily bread.

God delights in providing for His children according to His perfect wisdom.

Forgive Us Our Debts

Believers continue to confess their sins—not to regain salvation, but to maintain fellowship with their heavenly Father.

Jesus reminds us that forgiven people should also become forgiving people.

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

A heart that has experienced God’s forgiveness should reflect that same grace toward others.

Lead Us Not into Temptation

God never tempts anyone to sin.

Instead, Jesus teaches us to pray for God’s protection from temptation and for strength to resist the attacks of the evil one.

And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Every believer faces spiritual battles.

Prayer prepares us to stand firm.

Prayer Is About a Relationship

The Lord’s Prayer reminds us that prayer is much more than presenting a list of requests.

• Prayer is worship.
• Prayer is confession.
• Prayer is dependence.
• Prayer is surrender.
• Most importantly, prayer is fellowship with our heavenly Father.

As we spend time with Him, our faith grows stronger and our hearts become more like His.
