Why Good Friday Is Good, Not Bad
Many people ask, “Why is Good Friday called Good Friday?” After all, Good Friday is the day Jesus Christ was crucified. He suffered terribly, died on a wooden cross, and bore the punishment for sin. On the surface, it may seem like the day should be called Bad Friday instead.
But the answer is no. Good Friday is good because of what Jesus accomplished through His death.
What happened on the cross was painful, brutal, and heartbreaking. Yet through that suffering, God provided the way for sinners to be forgiven and reconciled to Him. That is why Christians do not call it Bad Friday. The cross was the place where Jesus Christ paid the penalty for sin for all who believe in Him.
Romans 8:28 (LSB) reminds us,
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.
What looked like the darkest moment in history became the greatest demonstration of God’s love and mercy. Jesus died on the cross for you. That is how much He loved you.
Jesus Paid for Your Sin on the Cross
No matter what you have done, the death of Jesus Christ is sufficient to pay for all of your sins – past, present, and future – if you believe in Him. The Bible teaches that salvation is not earned by human effort, religious rituals, or repeating words after a preacher. Salvation comes through Jesus Christ alone.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9, LSB)
The cross is good news because Jesus took the judgment that guilty sinners deserve. He died in our place so that those who trust in Him can receive forgiveness and the promise of eternal life. That is why Good Friday matters. Without the cross, there would be no hope of redemption.
John 3:36 (LSB) says,
He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.
This verse makes the issue clear. Eternal life belongs to those who believe in Jesus Christ. Rejecting Him leaves a person under God’s wrath.
The Unforgivable Sin
The unforgivable sin is not that someone has committed too many wrongs or has lived too sinful a life. The unpardonable sin is to reject the only Savior God has provided. If a person refuses Jesus Christ, that person refuses the only pardon available.
That is why Good Friday is such a serious and glorious truth. On that day, Jesus made the only way for sinners to be saved. Rejecting Him means rejecting the only rescue from sin and judgment.
Jesus also said in John 6:44 (LSB),
No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
Salvation is the work of God. We do not save ourselves, and no pastor, church, or religious formula can save us. Only God can draw a sinner to Christ.
When God Draws Your Heart
If you feel conviction over sin or a stirring in your heart to turn to Christ, do not ignore it. That may be God drawing you to Himself. Respond to Him in faith and repentance. Come to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
You can call upon Him in prayer and confess your need for His mercy. Salvation is not in the prayer itself, but in the Christ to whom you pray. A sincere cry to Him may sound like this:
“Jesus, come into my heart. I confess You as my Lord and Savior. Forgive me of my sins. I repent of my sins.”
Why the Resurrection Matters Too
Good Friday would have no saving power apart from Easter Sunday. If Jesus had died and remained in the grave, there would be no victory over sin, death, or the grave. The resurrection proves that Christ’s sacrifice was accepted and that He truly is Lord.
That is why Christians celebrate Good Friday with reverence and gratitude. Jesus died for sinners, and He rose again. Because of His death and resurrection, there is real hope, real forgiveness, and the promise of eternal life in Heaven for all who believe.
So, why is Good Friday called Good Friday instead of Bad Friday?
Because what happened on that day opened the door of salvation to all who trust in Jesus Christ.
The cross was terrible in suffering, but glorious in purpose.
And that is why Good Friday is truly good.
