Why Easter Is the Most Significant Event in History

More Than Just a Holiday

Easter is not merely a holiday on the Christian calendar. It is the single most significant event in human history because it centers on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If Jesus truly rose from the dead, then everything He said is true, salvation is real, eternal life is certain for believers, and the gospel is the only hope for sinners. If He did not rise, Christianity collapses.

That is why Easter matters more than any other event the world has ever known.

Before we look at three reasons Easter is the most significant event in history, two foundational truths must be clear:

  • First, Scripture must interpret Scripture. God’s Word is not to be twisted to fit human opinion or personal preference. The Apostle Peter wrote, “Know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes by one’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever made by the will of man, but men being moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (2 Peter 1:20–21, LSB).
  • Second, unbelief is not merely an intellectual problem. It is a spiritual problem rooted in the heart. First Corinthians 2:14 says that the natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God because they are spiritually discerned. In other words, apart from the work of the Holy Spirit, the truth of Scripture remains closed to the unbelieving heart.

This is why Easter is not just about remembering a historical event. It is about understanding what that event means and why it changes everything for every person who believes in Jesus Christ.

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ Guarantees Eternal Life for Believers

The first reason Easter is the most significant event in history is that the resurrection of Jesus Christ guarantees the future resurrection of all true believers.

Death entered the world through Adam. Life comes through Christ. The Apostle Paul explained this in 1 Corinthians 15:21 (LSB):

For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. Adam’s sin brought death to the human race, but Jesus Christ, through His resurrection, brought life to all who belong to Him.

This means Easter is not simply about Christ rising from the grave. It is also about the promise that those who are united to Him by faith will rise as well.

  • Romans 6:4–5 teaches that just as Christ was raised from the dead, believers too will walk in newness of life and share in the likeness of His resurrection.
  • Ephesians 2:4–6 says that God made believers alive together with Christ and raised them up with Him.
  • These are not poetic ideas. They are promises from God.

Every human being will die physically unless Christ returns first. But for the Christian, physical death is not the end. Because Jesus conquered the grave, believers have the assurance that they too will live forever with Him. The resurrection of Christ is therefore the foundation of Christian hope.

Without Easter, there is no certainty beyond the grave. Without the resurrection, death wins. But because Christ rose, death has been defeated for all who trust in Him.

That is why Easter is the most significant event in history. It tells us that the grave is not the end for the believer. It tells us that eternal life is not wishful thinking. It is guaranteed by the risen Christ.

The Resurrection Confirms the Cross

The second reason Easter is the most significant event in history is that the resurrection confirms the saving work Christ accomplished on the cross.

  • The cross is where atonement was made. Jesus Christ died in the place of sinners. He bore the penalty that believers deserved. Second Corinthians 5:21 (LSB) says, “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
  • On the cross, God treated Christ as though He had lived our sinful lives, though He was completely sinless. Christ bore the wrath of God against sin so that those who believe in Him might be forgiven and reconciled to the Father.

But how do we know the cross truly accomplished salvation? We know because Jesus rose from the dead.

  • The resurrection is the Father’s public declaration that the sacrifice of Christ was accepted. It is the divine validation of everything Jesus claimed. It proves that He is the Son of God. It proves that His death was not the tragic end of a religious teacher, but the victorious work of the Savior. It proves that sin was paid for and that the power of death was broken.
  • If Jesus had remained in the grave, there would be no basis for confidence that His death accomplished anything. But He did not remain in the grave. He rose. And because He rose, believers know the cross was sufficient.
  • Easter and the cross cannot be separated. The resurrection confirms the meaning of Good Friday. It tells us that forgiveness is real, redemption is complete, and the gospel is true.

This is why Christians do not merely admire Jesus as a moral teacher. We worship Him as the crucified and risen Lord.

The Resurrection Completes the Saving Work Applied to Believers

The third reason Easter is the most significant event in history is that the resurrection completes the saving work of Christ as it is applied to those who believe.

Romans 6:23 (LSB) says,

For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Sin earns death. Eternal life is not earned. It is a gift from God given through Christ.

Before salvation, every person is spiritually dead. A person may be physically alive, active, and strong, yet still be separated from God. Spiritual death means alienation from the Creator, bondage to sin, and inability to please God. That is the condition of every unbeliever.

But through Jesus Christ, spiritual death can be reversed.

  • When a sinner repents and trusts in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, God grants new life. The believer is forgiven, justified, and clothed in the righteousness of Christ. This is the doctrine of imputation. God credits the righteousness of Christ to the believer’s account.
  • That means the believer’s sins are no longer counted against him, and Christ’s perfect obedience is counted as his righteousness before God.
  • This is not because of anything a person has done. It is not earned through good works, religion, church attendance, or moral effort. Salvation is by grace through faith. Ephesians 2:8–9 (LSB) makes that plain: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, so that no one may boast.”

The resurrection matters because it declares that Christ’s saving work is complete and victorious. Jesus not only died for sin. He rose in triumph over sin, death, and hell. He now lives forever to intercede for believers. Hebrews 7:25 (LSB) says,

He (Jesus Christ) is able to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

A dead savior cannot save anyone. But Jesus is not dead. He is alive. He reigns in heaven today. That is why Easter is not a symbolic event. It is the living proof that Christ is still saving sinners.

What Easter Means for You

Easter is not only about what happened to Jesus. It is about what His resurrection means for you.

  • If the resurrection of Jesus Christ is true, then heaven is real, hell is real, sin is serious, judgment is certain, and salvation is found in Christ alone. If the resurrection were false, Christianity would be empty, the Bible would be false, and there would be no hope beyond this life.
  • But because Jesus rose from the dead, there is hope for sinners. There is forgiveness for the guilty. There is life for the spiritually dead. There is salvation for the one who repents and believes. There is power for transformation through the indwelling Holy Spirit. And there is the promise of eternal life for everyone who belongs to Christ.
  • This is why Easter should move believers to worship, gratitude, boldness, and evangelism. Christ commanded His followers in Matthew 28:19 to go and make disciples of all the nations. The risen Christ is not only the content of the gospel; He is also the authority behind the mission.
  • Faith comes by hearing the word of Christ (Romans 10:17). That is why it is so important to invite others to hear the gospel, especially at Easter. Many people attend church on Easter who do not attend at other times of the year. For some, it may be their clearest exposure to the truth of Jesus Christ, and their life depends upon it.

It Matters Where a Person Goes to Church

Churches built around entertainment, emotional experiences, personality-driven preaching, or worldly methods may stir feelings for a moment, but they cannot transform the heart.

  • Real transformation comes through the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. People do not need spiritual distraction. They need truth. They need the gospel. They need Christ.
  • That is why faithful, expository, verse-by-verse preaching is so important. God’s people grow when they hear God’s Word explained rightly. Unbelievers are confronted with truth when Scripture is proclaimed clearly.
  • Easter should not end with one emotional Sunday and then a return to spiritual indifference. It should lead people to ongoing submission to Christ and consistent commitment to a Bible-preaching church.

The Greatest Event in History

So why is Easter the most significant event in history?

  1. Because Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. He died on the cross for the sins of those who confess Him as their Lord and Savior. He rose from the dead in victory. He ascended into heaven. And He lives today, interceding for believers and calling sinners to repentance and faith.
  2. No one else in history has done that.
  3. The resurrection of Jesus Christ guarantees eternal life for believers, confirms the saving power of the cross, and declares that the work of redemption has been accomplished. That is why Easter stands above every other event in human history.

Jesus Christ is alive.

And because He lives, all who trust in Him will live also.
