Why does the name of Jesus Christ divide people so deeply? Pastor John Haggard explains why Jesus confronts sin, demands allegiance, and offers salvation.
Why does the simple mention of the name Jesus Christ stir such strong reactions?
In this episode, learn why no name divides people like the name of Jesus. When Jesus walked the earth, He divided crowds, families, religious leaders, political powers, and ordinary people.
He still does today.
Jesus is gentle, kind, merciful, and peaceful, but He also spoke plainly about truth, sin, repentance, judgment, and salvation. In Matthew 10:34–36, Jesus said He did not come to bring peace on the earth, but a sword. He was not speaking of a literal sword, but of the division that often comes between those who receive Him and those who reject Him.
This message looks at John 7, where the crowd was divided over the identity of Jesus. Some believed He was the Prophet. Others said He was the Christ. Still others rejected Him. That same division continues because Jesus is not merely one religious leader among many.
He presses every person toward a verdict.
You will also hear why Jesus came to earth as fully God and fully man, why sin must be paid for, and why Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
The name of Jesus divides because He confronts the natural human desire for self-rule. The unbelieving heart wants forgiveness without repentance, comfort without conviction, heaven without holiness, and the benefits of God without bowing before God. Jesus does not allow that.
This is not an easy message, but it is a necessary one. Jesus divides light from darkness, truth from error, belief from unbelief, repentance from self-justification, and eternal life from eternal judgment.
The division caused by Christ is not a failure of the Gospel. It is proof that the Gospel is doing what God intended.
