Why Is Salvation Important? Is Hell Real? (Part 4)

Understanding why salvation is important is not merely a matter of theology. It is a question with eternal consequences for every person.

In this final installment of our series about Hell, Pastor John Haggard explains the reality of Hell, the consequences of unforgiven sin, and why every person needs salvation through Jesus Christ.

Is Hell Real?

The Bible teaches that Hell is real and that rejecting God’s grace and mercy has eternal consequences.

God does not delight in the death of the wicked. In Ezekiel 33:11, He calls people to turn from their sinful ways and live. Second Peter 3:9 also says that God is patient, “not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.”

God offers mercy, forgiveness, and eternal life. However, the opportunity to receive salvation does not continue after death. This is why the decision to accept or reject Jesus Christ is urgent.

Why Is Salvation Important?

Every person is a sinner and needs to be reconciled to God. No amount of good behavior, religious activity, charitable giving, or personal effort can erase sin.

Salvation is important because it provides:

• Forgiveness of sin.
• Reconciliation with God.
• Freedom from condemnation.
• A transformed life through Jesus Christ.
• The promise of eternal life in Heaven.

Without salvation, unforgiven sin results in eternal separation from God. Through Jesus Christ, believers receive forgiveness and pass from spiritual death into eternal life.

Why Is Sharing the Gospel Important?

The word gospel means “good news.” The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, rose from the dead, and offers eternal life to everyone who believes in Him.

Romans 10:17 says:

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

People must hear the Gospel before they can understand their need for salvation. This is why Christians are called to share God’s Word with family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and others.

Sharing the Gospel is not about winning an argument. It is about helping people hear the message that can change their eternal destination.

What Happens When You Accept Jesus Christ?

Accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior begins an immediate and lifelong transformation. The Bible describes this through justification, sanctification, and glorification.

Justification

At the moment of salvation, the believer is justified before God. This means the believer is declared righteous—not because of personal goodness, but because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

The believer is no longer condemned and is viewed by God through the righteousness of Christ.

Sanctification

Sanctification is the continuing work of God in a Christian’s life. The believer is set apart for God and gradually grows in obedience and becomes more like Jesus Christ.

First Thessalonians 4:1–8 describes God’s desire for believers to live sanctified lives that honor Him.

Glorification

Glorification is the future promise awaiting every believer. Christians will receive transformed bodies free from sin, disease, suffering, and death.

This eternal hope belongs to everyone who has received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Can You Earn Salvation?

You cannot save yourself.

Salvation cannot be earned through good works, church attendance, baptism, charitable giving, religious ceremonies, or repeating a particular collection of words.

Ephesians 2:8–9 explains:

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, so that no one may boast.

Salvation is God’s gift. Only God can save you.

How Can You Receive Salvation?

If you feel God stirring your heart, do not ignore Him or assume you can respond later. None of us knows how much time remains in our earthly life.

Recognize that you are a sinner in need of forgiveness. Place your faith in Jesus Christ, repent of your sins, and receive Him as your Lord and Savior.

A prayer does not save you—God does. No pastor, ceremony, baptism, or collection of words can produce salvation. However, when God moves in your heart, you can express your faith to Him with words such as:

Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I place my faith in You and receive You as my Lord and Savior. Please forgive me and lead my life beginning today. Amen.
