If Someone Has a Plan to Commit Suicide – Do This Immediately
If you or someone you know says he or she has a plan to commit suicide, I need you to get help immediately—not later. If in the United States, please call or text 988 right now (or your local emergency number where you are such as 911). If you are in another country, please call your local emergency assistance number.
If you’re alone, please go be with someone safe today—family, a friend, your pastor, or even the Emergency Room at your local hospital. You don’t have to carry this by yourself.
- The Bible doesn’t explicitly address suicide directly, but it establishes principles that inform Christian teaching on the subject. Your body is described as “a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit,” purchased at a price, calling believers to glorify God with their physical lives. 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (LSB) says,
Or do you not know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
- “The commandment “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13) extends to self-harm, and life itself is presented as divinely determined, with God setting the limits of human existence:
Since his days are determined, The number of his months is with You; And his limits You have set so that he cannot pass (Job 14:5, LSB).
Suicide is one of the most painful topics anyone can face—especially when it’s personal. People who are suffering often aren’t looking for a debate; they’re looking for relief, hope, and someone to tell them they’re not alone.
Does Suicide Automatically Condemn a Christian to Hell?
Regarding whether a Christian loses salvation through suicide, any teaching that says suicide automatically condemns a Christian to hell is not biblically supported. Scripture guarantees eternal life from the moment of genuine faith in Christ. Nothing can separate a Christian from God’s love, and suicide—being a created action—cannot sever this connection. Christ’s death covers all sins, including suicide committed during spiritual weakness.
- However, suicide remains a serious sin against God; the Bible classifies it as murder and affirms that the timing of death belongs to God alone. What determines entrance into heaven is not the act of suicide itself, but whether a person has accepted salvation through Christ.
- An unsaved person who commits suicide faces judgment for rejecting Christ, not for the suicide. Additionally, no one fully knows what occurs in a person’s heart at death—some may experience last-moment conversions and cry out for God’s mercy.
If You Are a Christian, Your Salvation Is Secure
If you are a Christian, that is the best news you can have in your life, as your salvation in heaven is guaranteed, and no one can take your salvation from you. Jesus said in John 10:28-29 (LSB),
and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish—ever; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
That doesn’t make suicide “small” or acceptable—but it does clarify where salvation rests: in Christ’s saving work, not our final moment of weakness.
What God Says About Your Life Right Now
When someone is crushed, God does not stand far away. Scripture repeatedly emphasizes His nearness, care, and invitation to come to Him.
- “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
- “Cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
- “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
God is not far from you in this. Your pain is real, and God invites you to bring it to Him—and to let others help you carry it.
The Question Many People Ask
A question oftentimes asked is, “If I die by suicide, will I still go to heaven?”
I can’t pretend this is a light question. Scripture is clear that suicide is not God’s will for us, and it’s a tragic sin that ends the possibility of repentance and repair in that moment.
- “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1, LSB).
- “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out.”
(John 6:37, LSB) - “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39, LSB, the Apostle Paul who spoke and wrote down the Holy Spirit-inspired word of God).
So here’s what I can say biblically: every Christian’s hope is in Jesus. If you belong to Christ, your life is precious and worth protecting—and God calls you to choose life and seek help:
I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your seed, (Deuteronomy 30:19, LSB).
Hope for the Person Who Feels Trapped
For those struggling with suicidal thoughts, the Bible offers comfort and hope. Jesus invites the weary and heavy-laden to find rest in him (Matthew 11:28–30), and God promises that temptation will not exceed human capacity to endure, providing a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13).
- God wants you alive. He is providing help right now through people, counselors, doctors, and the church. This suffering can be treated and carried with support.
- A person does not have to decide his or her whole future today. You only have to survive today—and get support.
Three Practical Steps You Can Take Right Now
- If in the US, call/text 988 (or your local emergency number such as 911). If outside the US, call the local emergency services number for your area.
- Tell one real-life person today: “I’m not okay. I have had thoughts of suicide, and I need help.
- Remove the means (anything you planned to use) or put distance between you and it.
If You Haven’t Yet Accepted Christ
- If you have not already accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and you feel a prompting in your heart or you are wondering about it, it could be God drawing you. Accept His prompting now, as there are no second chances once a person dies:
- Invite Jesus into your heart.
- Ask forgiveness for your sins.
- Repent, meaning to turn away, from habitual sin
- And be obedient to His Word.
How to Know If You Are a Christian
The purpose of an assurances test of true salvation is to give Christians security and confidence in their connection with God, not to instill fear or uncertainty.
