Why Do People Hate You?
If you are a Christian, what Jesus said pertains to you: “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged TO the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong TO the world, but I have chosen you OUT of the world. THAT is why the world hates you.” (John 15:18 &19)
Fear
To know how to deal with hate, you first have to understand hate. So why are Christians, who are called to love, sometimes so vehemently hated? The short answer is, people fear what they do not understand or agree with.
Is There Good Hatred?
Yes, those who love God, should hate, as this text makes clear: “O you who love Jehovah, hate what is bad. He is guarding the lives of his loyal ones; He rescues them from the hand of the wicked.” (Psalm 97:10) Jehovah in the text is another name for God.
The Walking Dead
Scripture calls non-Christians as “dead.” Ephesians 2:1-2 (ESV) says, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.”
Communication
On the topic of communication, it’s reported that one the world’s largest advertising agencies at the time, Leo Burnette, taught its employees, “Don’t say anything so it can be understood; say it so it cannot be, possibly misundersood.” Leo Burnette created some of the most famous advertising characters in the world. Some of you will remember The Jolly Green Giant (sing along “ho ho ho, green giant”), Morris the Cat, Charlie Tuna, the near-unemployed Maytag repairman, the Pillsbury doughboy, Tony the Tiger, and the legendary Marlboro Man.
