How Do We Deal with Burning Anger
Most would agree that intense, burning anger is everywhere, and perhaps at its highest level in modern times. We see it on television, in our homes, on college campuses, at work, on the internet, almost everywhere we go including churches. But did you also know that not all anger is bad?
There are actually two types of burning anger: Righteous anger and Unrighteous anger.
The unrighteous form of burning anger is one of the hardest emotions to control. It’s easy for any of us to get “set off” by just hearing a few words spoken to us from someone we know, especially those who are closest to us as they always know best the hot buttons to push that end up quickly ramp up our anger.
To handle burning anger, some people will turn to drugs, alcohol, excessive shopping, gambling, or other addictions. Others become the abusers in abusive relationships. Some will turn to self-help books for answers.
Why Self-Help Books Don’t Help with Burning Anger
Often times, people think they can solve anger problems on their own by reading self-help books to try to heal their behavior or the behavior of others. Self-help ideas from self-help books, while they can initially sound like good ideas, usually only last for a few weeks, if even that long, and then have you noticed how quickly it’s back to the same old behavior of spewing out burning anger against loved one or anybody else in their path?
Holy Spirit Power Lasts
Christians have Holy Spirit power, the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead, to deal with unrighteous anger. Holy Spirit power is what powers us with the wisdom and discernment that we receive from the Holy Bible to help suppress and eliminate spewing out burning, unrighteous anger. The Holy Spirit convicts us when we are about to “spew” and can help hold us back from destroying relationships. It’s like an inner voice that says, “Hey wait just a minute before you blow up…count to 5…settle down…think about what you are going to say and how you are going to say it before you speak.”
Two Choices
Life is about the choices we make, and there are two choices to make in dealing with burning anger: choose to stay self-energized as long as the batteries hold out (that’s the same as relying on self-help power), or choose a greater power that comes from the Holy Spirit, the power to stay energized and that never runs out.
Sin Virus
Learn about the “sin virus” on today’s podcast and how it impact unrighteous, burning anger, and learn why we must submit to the authority of scripture, the word of God, in order to conquer burning anger. Just like you have a playbook in the game of football to know how to win a game, the Bible is the playbook on how to conquer spewing unrighteous, burning anger.
Good advice comes from the Bible. Here is just one of many wisdom proverbs: “Do not associate with a man given to anger; Or go with a hot-tempered man, Lest you learn his ways, And find a snare for yourself.” (Proverbs 22:24-25 NASB).

- If You or Someone You Know Is Not a Christian
- If you feel a stirring or prompting in your heart that you have not felt before or maybe have ignored before, it could be God asking you to accept his Son as your Lord and Savior. If you reject the prompting of the Holy Spirit, you remove yourself from the only force (the power of the Holy Spirit) that can lead you to repentance and restoration to God.
- Because there is no second chance to accept Christ if you die before you accept Him, invite Him into your heart now, proclaim Him your Lord and Savior, and ask forgiveness of your sins. It’s the most significant decision that you can make about where you are going to spend eternity.
