God’s Providence and America’s Enemies

The Providence of God

The Sovereignty of God

When enemies rise against the United States, it’s not just a matter of politics or military strategy. For those who believe in the God of Scripture, every battle—whether seen or unseen—is under His sovereign rule.

“Yahweh nullifies the counsel of the nations; He frustrates the thoughts of the peoples. The counsel of Yahweh stands forever, The thoughts of His heart from generation to generation. Blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.” (Psalm 33:10 LSB)

Scripture makes it clear: God is not a bystander in global conflict. He raises up leaders.
Daniel 2:21 (LSB) says:
“And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding.”

God turns the hearts of rulers:

“The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of Yahweh; He turns it wherever He pleases (Proverbs 21:1 LSB).

God permits war as both judgment and protection:

“A time to love and a time to hate; A time for war and a time for peace” (Ecclesiastes 3:8 LSB).
When America faces enemies determined to do harm, it is not unbiblical for the government to act decisively. In fact, Romans 13:4 (LSB) tells us this about the governing authority:
“for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword in vain, for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.”
But war must be waged with righteous restraint—not out of vengeance or greed. Micah 6:8 (LSB) reminds us:
“He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does Yahweh require of you But to do justice, to love lovingkindness, And to walk humbly with your God?”

And what is the role of the believer?

“First of all, then, I exhort that petitions and prayers, requests and thanksgivings, be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity” (1 Timothy 2:1–2 LSB)

The Christian’s Role

As Christians, we pray for wise leaders, safe soldiers, and God’s mercy on all involved. Nations will rise and fall, but the Lord reigns forever.
Justice may come through war. But ultimate victory comes only through the providence of God.
