“Why did God put me on Earth?”

It is one of the most important questions we can ask. Until we understand why we are here, life can feel confusing, empty, or without direction.

People searching for purpose sometimes say:

• “You have to get everything you can right now because you only go through life once.”
• “There is no guarantee of a future.”
• “I will do what I want and believe what I want. No one can tell me what to do.”

These statements may sound independent or practical, but they leave God and eternity out of the picture. The Bible gives us a different understanding of our lives, our purpose, and our future.

God Created Us for a Relationship With Him

God created us to know Him, love Him, and live in relationship with Him. He also calls us to love the people around us.

When Jesus was asked which commandment was the greatest, He answered:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Jesus then gave the second greatest commandment:

Love your neighbor as yourself.

These instructions, found in Matthew 22:37–39, provide the foundation for understanding our purpose. We are here to love God and to demonstrate His love to others.

God Can Use Your Experiences to Help Others

Your experiences—both joyful and painful—can become part of your purpose.

Perhaps you have experienced bankruptcy, an illness, the loss of a job, divorce, or the death of someone you love. Someone else may now be facing a situation similar to one you have already endured.

Because of your experience, you may be able to listen, encourage, and offer hope in a way that person can understand. You do not need to be a pastor or Bible scholar to share what God has done in your life.

A witness simply tells the truth about what he or she has experienced. Your personal testimony could help another person realize that they are not alone and that hope is still possible.

God Calls Us to Pray for Others

Another part of our purpose is intercessory prayer—praying for the needs of other people.

We may not always know what to say or how to solve someone’s problem, but we can pray. We can ask God to provide comfort, wisdom, strength, healing, and direction.

The Bible also teaches that Jesus intercedes for believers. When we pray for others, we follow His example and participate in an important ministry of compassion. Read Hebrews 7:25.

God Calls Us to Serve

Jesus demonstrated that a meaningful life is not centered on being served. It is centered on serving others.

Mark 10:45 explains that the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give His life for others.

Service can take many forms. You might volunteer at a church, help a neighbor, encourage a struggling friend, provide a meal, share your professional abilities, or simply make time to listen.

You do not need a special title to serve. You only need a willing heart.

God Calls Us to Share the Good News

The word “gospel” means “good news.” Christians are called to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others, that Jesus Christ came to earth to save sinners like you and me.

This does not mean pressuring people or treating them disrespectfully. First Peter 3:15 tells believers to be ready to explain the hope they have—and to do so with gentleness and respect.

Sharing your faith can begin with a simple conversation. Tell someone how God has helped you, what Jesus means to you, or why you have hope during difficult circumstances.

How Can I Begin Living God’s Purpose?

If you are asking why God put you on Earth, here are several practical steps you can take.

1. Join a Bible-Based Church

A healthy church featuring expository preaching, that is, preaching the Bible verse by verse, can help you learn about God, worship with other believers, and find opportunities to serve. Look for a church that teaches the Bible clearly and disciples people to help them grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ.

2. Read the Bible Every Day

One of the best ways to know God is to read His Word.

Consider beginning with one chapter of Proverbs each day. Proverbs offers practical wisdom and helps develop discernment.

You should also read one chapter of the Gospel of John each day. John explains who Jesus is, why He came, and why faith in Him matters.

Reading one chapter from each book will take about 15 to 20 minutes each day, but that daily practice will have a lasting influence on your life.

3. Volunteer and Serve

Volunteer through your church or a community organization. Serving allows you to help others while meeting people and developing meaningful relationships.

Ask yourself: “What abilities, experiences, or resources has God given me that I can use to help someone else?”

4. Join a Small Group

Meaningful relationships are often formed in circles, not merely in rows.

A small group gives you an opportunity to know people personally, study the Bible, pray together, and support one another. God did not create us to face life alone.

At any moment, we may be coming out of a difficult situation, going through one now, or approaching a challenge we cannot yet see. Trusted relationships provide encouragement and support when life changes unexpectedly.

Do We Really Have Only One Life?

Our time on Earth is temporary, but the Bible teaches that our existence does not end at death. Our choices on Earth have eternal significance.

The most important decision a person can make is whether he will accept the salvation God offers through Jesus Christ. God uses the Holy Spirit to convict people of their need of a Savior, and if you are not believer and feel a stirring in your heart, it may be God prompting you to accept His Son as your Lord and Savior. Ephesians 2:8-9 says,

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, so that no one may boast.

Is Our Future Guaranteed?

We cannot guarantee what will happen tomorrow, but the Bible teaches that eternity is real. That makes the question of where we will spend eternity far more important than any temporary uncertainty.

God offers forgiveness and eternal life through His Son for all who believe in Him and confess Him as Lord and Savior.

Why Do We Resist Being Accountable to God?

Human beings naturally want life on their own terms. We want to make our own rules and resist anyone who tells us what to do.

However, following Jesus requires us to recognize that we need God. It means turning away from sin, trusting Christ, and allowing Him to lead our lives.

We cannot earn our way into heaven through good behavior, religious activity, or service. Salvation is God’s gift, received through faith in Jesus Christ. Read Ephesians 2:8-9 above again.

How Can I Accept Jesus Christ?

If you feel God drawing you toward Him, you can respond by speaking honestly to Him. Salvation does not depend on repeating a particular set of words; it comes through sincere repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

Jesus, I know that I have sinned and ask Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I place my faith in You and receive You as my Lord and Savior. I repent of my sins. Please guide my life and help me follow You beginning now. Amen.

God created you to know Him, love others, serve with purpose, and live with eternity in mind. Your life has meaning—and discovering that purpose can change how you live today.
