Can You Lose Your Salvation? What the Bible Says

Can you lose your salvation after genuinely placing your faith in Jesus Christ? Many Christians struggle with this question, especially after falling into sin or experiencing a season of doubt. The Bible teaches that eternal life is a gift from God and that those who truly belong to Christ are held securely by Him.

Our assurance does not rest on our ability to hold on to God. It rests on God’s power and faithfulness to hold on to us.

Jesus Promises Eternal Life

Jesus did not describe salvation as temporary life that could be taken away at any moment. He called it eternal life:

I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish—ever; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
—John 10:28 (LSB)

Jesus continued by explaining that no one can snatch His people out of the Father’s hand. The believer’s security rests in the hands of both the Son and the Father.

The phrase “never perish—ever” provides strong assurance. Eternal life is secured by Christ, not maintained by human strength.

Believers Are Sealed by the Holy Spirit

The Bible also describes believers as being sealed by God. After hearing and believing the gospel, Christians “were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13, LSB).

Ephesians 1:14 calls the Holy Spirit a pledge of the believer’s inheritance. This seal points to God’s ownership and His promise to complete the redemption He has begun.

Salvation is therefore not merely a reservation we make for ourselves. It is a work God begins, secures, and completes.

Does Sin Cause a Christian to Lose Salvation?

Christians still struggle with temptation and sin. Salvation does not mean believers are perfect. However, genuine faith produces repentance, spiritual growth, and a changing life.

A Christian’s sin can damage fellowship with God, weaken spiritual growth, bring painful consequences, and requires confession and repentance. But our failures do not make Christ’s sacrifice insufficient.

At the same time, the Bible warns against an empty profession of faith. A person may claim to know Christ without ever having genuinely trusted Him. Therefore, the important question is not merely, “Did I once say a prayer?” but, “Am I trusting Jesus Christ, and is there evidence of His work in my life?”

What Is the Unforgivable Sin?

Jesus warned about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit in Matthew 12:31–32. This should not be understood as an accidental statement, a moment of doubt, or a sin committed by someone who sincerely wants God’s forgiveness.

Persistent rejection of the Holy Spirit’s testimony about Jesus leaves a person without forgiveness because that person continues rejecting the only Savior who can forgive sin.

John 3:36 states the difference clearly:

“He who believes in the Son has eternal life.”

The issue is not that someone’s past is too sinful for Jesus to forgive. The danger is refusing the salvation God offers through His Son.

Only God Can Save You

Salvation begins with God’s work. Jesus said:

“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.”
—John 6:44 (LSB)

God draws sinners to Christ, grants salvation, and promises resurrection on the last day. Our confidence is not in our goodness, religious activity, or ability to save ourselves. Our confidence is in Jesus Christ.

How Can I Know I Am Truly Saved?

Biblical assurance begins with the object of your faith. Are you trusting in Jesus Christ alone—His death and resurrection—for forgiveness and eternal life?

Scripture also encourages believers to examine their lives for evidence of genuine faith, including:

• A continuing trust in Jesus Christ.
• Repentance when you sin.
• A growing desire to obey God.
• Love for other believers.
• The work of the Holy Spirit in your life.
• Perseverance in faith.

These things do not earn salvation. They are evidence of the new life God produces in those who belong to Christ.

Your Salvation Is Secure in Christ

If you have genuinely placed your faith in Jesus Christ, your salvation rests in His power—not your perfection. No person can remove you from His hand, and no failure is greater than His grace.

When you sin, confess it and return to God. Continue trusting Christ, learning His Word, and walking in obedience. Your security is found in the Savior who gives eternal life and promises never to abandon those who belong to Him.
