A passport identifies your country. A birth certificate records where your earthly life began. But neither answers a question that reaches far beyond this life: Where do you belong for eternity?
In this episode, Pastor John Haggard explores what it means to have citizenship in heaven and how that belonging changes the way Christians live today. Drawing from Philippians 3:20–21, John explains that believers already belong to Christ while eagerly awaiting His return. Our future rests in the Savior who will transform our humble bodies to be like His glorious body.
That promise speaks directly to the struggles we face now. People may judge us by our failures, circumstances, or past. Hurtful words can leave us questioning our worth and wondering where we belong. Yet human opinion does not have the final word. God knows our hearts, and those who belong to Christ are members of His household.
What does that mean when ordinary life feels overwhelming? Having citizenship in heaven gives us a lasting perspective on temporary circumstances. It helps us face disappointment without surrendering hope, receive correction without making human approval our identity, and remember that suffering will not define the believer’s future forever.
Colossians 3:1–3 calls believers to set their minds on the things above, where Christ is. This does not remove our responsibilities here. It changes the priorities we bring to them. Our families, work, relationships, and resources become opportunities to honor the One to whom we belong.
John also examines Jesus’ teaching about treasure in Matthew 6:19–21. Earthly possessions can deteriorate, disappear, or be stolen. When our deepest security depends on them, our hearts remain attached to what cannot last. Jesus directs His followers toward treasure in heaven and invites us to consider what our choices reveal about our devotion.
Where do your time, attention, and money go? What do you turn to for security? What would change if eternity shaped your decisions today? These questions help bring this message into everyday life, encouraging generosity, service, and faithfulness.
The episode also addresses the seriousness of our eternal destination. Jesus speaks of eternal punishment and eternal life in Matthew 25:46. Heaven is not something we earn through respectable behavior, religious activity, or a Christian upbringing. We need forgiveness and new life through Jesus Christ.
As Ephesians 2:8–10 teaches, salvation is by grace through faith, not by works. Good works follow as the fruit of God’s saving work. Christ died for our sins and rose again; our hope rests in Him.
